MCLAREN wins F1 Constructors’ title for 2024 at ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

AP1 and a P10 for Norris and Piastri were enough to secure their first constructors’ title since 1998, ahead of the Ferraris of Sainz and Leclerc in second and third.

ABU DHABI, UAE, 10 December 2024 – McLaren triumphed in the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit, ending the papaya team’s 26-year wait for an F1 Constructors’ Championship in the 2024 season finale.

Lando Norris and team-mate Oscar Piastri led from the front row at Turn 1 until a collision with Max Verstappen cost Piastri 17 places and the four-time world champion was handed a 10-second time penalty after the first lap. Despite starting from P14, Charles Leclerc gained 11 places in the melee and the Monegasque continued his steady progress through the field to finish in P3.

But it wasn’t enough. Despite Ferrari’s final performance, Carlos Sainz’s P2 and Leclerc’s superb drive that allowed him to climb onto the third step of the podium, it was always an uphill battle for the Scuderia to make up the 21-point deficit.

Lewis Hamilton celebrated his farewell song to the Silver Arrows and his fourth-place finish by enjoying doughnuts after the race, while team-mate George Russell finished fifth. Verstappen was sixth, followed by Pierre Gasly, Nico Hulkenberg and Fernando Alonso, with Piastri completing the top 10.

The chequered flag concludes the longest ever F1 season and four days of world-class entertainment on Yas Island, which drew record crowds to Yas Marina Circuit for the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and Etihad Park for the FAB After-Race Concerts. The weekend’s incredible entertainment programme, Yasalam presented by e&, included performances by Teddy Swims and South Korean DJ Peggy Gou, Maroon 5, 15-time Grammy Award winner Eminem and two-time Grammy Award winner Muse, as well as official after-parties including Afterlife Abu Dhabi, Mahmut Orhan, and Lost Frequencies.
